Soon after their elderly parents moved in, our clients needed a master bath of their own. The challenge of this project was to take their outdated guest bath and turn it into a fully functional master bath retreat. The existing bath consisted of only a sink and was open to the bedroom. We added new walls to create privacy as well as a tub, shower, and toilet to make it a complete bath. By locating the toilet in its own alcove and using cool colors we were able to create a sense of spaciousness.
Glass tile adds sparkle behind the mirror and provides accent to the floor. Special features make grooming, bathing, and cleaning easier: The fog free mirror maintains a clear view for shaving while someone enjoys an invigorating bath with a showerhead that injects air into the water stream. The flooring resembles limestone but is actually a low maintenance porcelain and the quartz countertop is delicate in appearance yet highly stain and scratch resistant.
The bath was planned not just for the couple but for the whole family to use, including their parents and 5 year old daughter. The 12” deep bench at the foot of the tub makes it easy to get in and out and to sit and soak feet. Bathing the 5 year old is convenient with the handheld shower. The shower controls were offset to make it easier to turn on the shower without getting in. The 36” wide pocket door maintains the floor space and makes it easy for someone to get through who has a walker. All of the walls have ¾” plywood behind the drywall, should the owners want to install grab bars in the future. For future maintenance, we added an access panel on the exterior wall to access tub and shower plumbing.
